At the moment i am ailing. I have read many books about these. I know the Old and new Testaments and also know the other religions of the world. I shall share useful informations with the noble world of Christianity. These have the long narratives and can not be explained in few lines.

Re: Guest Post: Is Hell the Center of our Faith?

I think the question here really is what is the Gospel? The Gospel of Jesus is not so much about us getting to heaven, but heaven getting into us for transformation of life now, that is the power of salvation. There has been too much focus on getting a ticket to heaven and that is not the Gospel - great, well written article!!

Re: Do Angels and Demons Really Exist?

Hey everyone, I'm not sure how comments were enabled on this particular post. We generally don't enable them because we don't have the staff to manage it and Greg doesn't have the time to engage the way he would like to. No one can judge another person's following because each of us is to follow Jesus as He leads; it's very customized (almost like a relationship!) for each person/family/church ("who are you to judge another's servant"). There isn't a one-size-fits-all theology about how we are to follow Him because Jesus is leading and He is outside all of our boxes. Our only concern is to follow. A lost art perhaps? Difficult, you bet. But let's simply encourage each other to follow, rather than debate about how we think others should follow.

Re: Shouldn’t preachers rally Christians to fight political injustice?

I agree with Greg that it is dangerous to slap a Christian sticker on any political position. I was reading a book by David Beckmann, Exodus from Hunger: We are called to Change the Politics of Hunger, and he probably falls into the high-priest-telling-caesar-what-to-do camp. Beckmann advocates reforming U.S. foreign assistance and U.S. farm subsidies among many other political positions. Maybe all this is good, maybe not. On the other hand, I do think that love itself is "complex and ambiguous" and that to be good lovers we must "wade through it all". What is the best way to discipline a child? Should I confront my abusive alcoholic father or keep enabling him? Should I home school or subject my children to bad influences? Should chastise my co-worker's bigotted humor or let it go this time and just set a good example of non-bigotry? I think love and politics calls for wisdom and humility. But maybe there are some better positions than others. Not everything in politics is up for grabs because it is complex and ambiguous. But I do agree that for that very reason we ought to be very cautious in saying "this is the Christian thing to do". This is why Beckmann said that his Bread for the World organization fought the U.S. Farm Bill in 2007 "with some trepidation".

Re: Shouldn’t preachers rally Christians to fight political injustice?

Hi Phila,

Greg is going to be responding to your concern in a blog post sometime in the next week. I've read multiple texts written by you and its difficult to listen much longer as someone in poverty. The state, like all institutions, including the Church, is fallen. Its easy to make your argument when you are in a position of privilege. Christians need to pressure the government to regulate capitalism or else. Our state recently cut funding to the poor. This is hurting my family. You can sit back and not vote and not influence the government, but those who don't care about the poor will. I understand that you have a very legitimate theology, but the Church doesn't have the power and resources to change the lives of all poor people everywhere. It can change structures without tackling them. MLK didn't change structures without attempting to influence the state. Caesar isn't God. If we work with Caesar, why does that make him God? I don't get it. Its too simple. Also, try solving any environmental problems without pressuring the state to regulate capitalism. Not going to happen.

Sorry, sir. I know you are incredibly smart and have a deep love for the poor, but unless you are in their situation, its hard to speak about these issues. You're a white male middle-income pastor. If you really want to defend the poor from Caesar, use the political means that exist. The Scriptures aren't God either. If our ability to actually help the poor is stunted by our theology, is it really a good theology? I don't know. But, if anyone out there wants to help the poor, I recommend voting. Yes, Obama and Romney aren't that different. But, I can tell you that without adequate levels of food stamps and other public assistance programs, we're going to be in big trouble.

Re: Shouldn’t preachers rally Christians to fight political injustice?

Glory be to God! Our government doesn't just rule over us, like a first century empire, it represents us. So a certain amount of political involvement is called for. But I agree that it should come a DISTANT second (well, maybe third or fourth) behind what we can do OURSELVES as individuals and a community of Christ-followers.

Re: Shouldn’t preachers rally Christians to fight political injustice?

'The high priests of Caesar's court' - that's a great phrase! I really take the point about getting on and doing it ourselves rather than campaigning for 'Caesar' to do it.

But what about getting involved in projects that are already running; existing church projects or projects run by the state in one form or another? If it's a state-run project then there will be restrictions, but I'd have thought it makes sense for Christians to throw their energies into good things that the authorities are already doing rather than setting up our own similar project. Especially if we don't have much expertise in the issue in question, I'd have thought.

Re: What is this?

Okay, now that I got out of the dashboard and view this I see that it IS our new site. So was that the BLOG feature of the site I was just on? Or are we going to allow for comments? OR what?

Re: Blue Like Jazz

Here is my comment on my own article.
